When the summer winds playfully whipped through my garden, a few beautiful hydrangea blossoms became their unwitting victims. But rather than lament their fate, I chose to embrace the opportunity, swiftly trimming the casualties and placing them lovingly in a vase. Waste not, want not, as they say!

These vibrant blooms became the focal point of a painting I created during the Worcestershire Open Studios in 2022. Surrounded by the energy of the event and the passionate, art-loving visitors who stopped by, I found inspiration in the lively atmosphere and the shared appreciation for all things art.

With brush in hand, I set out to capture the delicate charm of my favourite variety, the hydrangea paniculata. This shade-loving plant boasts exquisitely intricate, lace-like flower heads that never cease to captivate me. Who could resist their ethereal beauty?

As I worked on the painting, I was reminded of the power of art to bring people together, to spark conversation, and to inspire new connections. Each stroke became not only a celebration of the hydrangeas' enchanting allure but also a tribute to the community of art enthusiasts who had gathered to share their passion and exchange ideas.

Between chats with visitors and the occasional sip of tea, I gradually brought the hydrangeas to life on the canvas, their delicate petals and dreamy, lace-like structures taking shape before my eyes. The finished piece, a testament to the resilience of the blooms and the creative spirit of the Open Studios event, now serves as a cherished reminder of that magical time.

Looking back on that experience, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to combine my love for art, nature, and the camaraderie of the creative community. Through the simple act of salvaging those wind-tossed hydrangeas and immortalising them in paint, I was able to create not only a beautiful piece of art but also a lasting memory of the connections forged during those inspiring days at the Worcestershire Open Studios.
