Title

Painted during the early autumn of 2022, this piece captures the essence of an Indian summer that graced the season with its lingering warmth. As the final sunflowers of the year began to wither, I felt a sense of melancholy setting in, urging me to memorialise them in my artwork.

Throughout the creative process, I struggled to find the perfect background colour that would complement the sunflowers and provide the contrast I desired. After much experimentation and several revisions, I finally settled on a bold black hue with subtle yellow undertones. This choice not only enhanced the vibrancy of the sunflowers but also symbolised their grand finale, as if they were taking their final bow on the stage of the season.

This artwork also holds a special place in my heart as it features the last appearance of my cherished Chinese vase, which has since been broken. The intricate design and elegance of the vase served as a beautiful counterpoint to the organic shapes and textures of the sunflowers, adding an element of sophistication to the composition. It's a bittersweet reminder of the fleeting nature of beauty and the importance of preserving it through creative expression.

Together, the sunflowers and the Chinese vase create a poignant tableau that encapsulates the transient nature of life and the inevitability of change. The bold background choice serves as a reminder to embrace the present moment and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us, even as seasons pass and cherished possessions are lost.

Ultimately, this piece is a celebration of the resilience of nature, the power of art to immortalise fleeting moments, and the enduring beauty that can be found in the face of change. As the sunflowers finished their season with a bang, so too does this artwork stand as a testament to their vibrant spirit and the joy they brought into my life.
