Painted in 2021, this piece was inspired by a memorable family walk on Easter Monday at the picturesque Lake Ukiel in northern Poland. The day was exceptionally cold, yet bright and sunny, signalling the first stirrings of spring in the continental climate. The air was crisp and invigorating, and the atmosphere was filled with a sense of renewal and hope.

During our walk, I was captivated by the sight of the bare silver birches, their slender trunks gleaming against the backdrop of the emerging season. The bright, harsh morning sun cast striking shadows on the ground, creating a mesmerising interplay of light and darkness. I couldn't resist taking numerous sketches, eager to capture the essence of this enchanting scene.

The painting that emerged from those sketches is a heartfelt tribute to that special day. It encapsulates the joyous feelings of togetherness we shared as a family, as well as the awe-inspiring beauty of nature as it slowly awakened from its winter slumber. The vivid portrayal of the silver birches and their shadows reflects not only the stark contrasts of the landscape but also the warmth and happiness that filled our hearts.

The composition itself is a visual representation of the delicate balance between light and shadow, emphasising the fleeting and transient nature of such moments. The choice of colours further enhances the sense of a chilly yet sun-filled day, with cool tones intermingling with the subtle warmth of the morning sun.

This painting serves as a cherished reminder of the simple joys in life – the love of family, the beauty of nature, and the happiness that can be found in the most seemingly ordinary moments. It is a testament to the power of art to capture the essence of our experiences, preserving them for all time, and allowing us to relive the emotions and sensations that made that day at Lake Ukiel so unforgettable.
