This painting is a loving tribute to the enchanting Italian summer of 2022, where warm sunshine and gentle breezes graced the landscape, awakening memories of simpler times. The scene captures the rustic charm of a crumbling stone wall, its weathered surface bearing witness to years of history and the passage of time. Nestled against this backdrop, an old, elegant urn stands proudly, a testament to the beauty of imperfection and the allure of days gone by.

The true stars of this composition, however, are the vibrant hydrangea blooms that cascade in a riot of magenta and burgundy hues. Their lush, full petals seem to sing with the joy of the season, their vivid colours a dazzling contrast to the understated tones of the wall and urn. Hydrangeas hold a special place in my heart, as they flourish in abundance in my garden, serving as an ever-present source of inspiration for my artistic explorations.

In the language of flowers, hydrangeas symbolise gratitude, grace, and beauty – qualities that are evident in their delicate, intricate blossoms. They remind us of the importance of expressing appreciation for the simple pleasures in life, and of recognising the elegance that can be found in the most humble of settings.

As I painted this scene, I sought to convey not only the visual splendor of the hydrangeas but also the emotions they evoke – a sense of serenity, a connection to the past, and an appreciation for the unassuming beauty that surrounds us. This artwork is more than just a depiction of a moment in time; it is an invitation to pause, reflect, and celebrate the enduring charm of nature and the warmth of a sun-drenched Italian summer. Painted in oil.
